BOOKS
Osprey - Modern Israeli Tanks and Infantry Carriers 1985-2004
by Marsh Gelbart and illustrated by Tony Bryan

Over the last two decades, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has introduced a variety of new armoured fighting vehicles. Older AFVs such as the M48 and M60 have been improved beyond recognition, in the current Magach 7 series. The performance of the indigenously designed and manufactured Merkava tank has also been significantly improved with new upgraded variants and the recently introduced Merkava 4.

The Israeli infantry including assault engineers have also received new purpose built armoured vehicles such as the Achzarit, Puma, Nagmachon and Nakpadon. These are based on obsolete main battle tanks such as the T54/55 and Centurions that no longer serve as main battle tanks. The book details the design, modification and combat history of all these tanks. Each vehicle is also covered under the headings of protection, firepower, mobility, in-service history and variants.

What I particularly like about the book is that it covers current in-service vehicles for a specific period rather than a general description. The colour artwork in the book is very nice and the colour and B&W images are scattered throughout the book – nice one.

The book is the usual size having 48 pages and contains 23 black and white and 27 colour photos. The book costs £8.99 and can be purchased from Osprey direct PO Box 140. Wellingborough, Northants NN8 2FA UK www.ospreypublishing.com or from specialist military bookstores.
